Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB,BS)

General Information

The MB BS Degree Programme is a medical undergraduate programme providing a broad education for the study of health and disease. In addition to medical training, students experience university life and the beginnings of professional development in preparation for a career in Medicine.

The award of a UWI medical degree entitles graduates to be registered with the medical councils of the English speaking Caribbean for internship and for later independent practice or specialist training.

Outline of the Educational Programme

The MB BS Programme is 5 years in duration.

In the first two years, emphasis is placed on learning the structure and functioning of the human body. The courses cover Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and are integrated with the teaching of Pharmacology, basic Pathology, Microbiology and Community Health. A simultaneous introductory clinical course is designed to provide relevance of this knowledge to later clinical practice.

Formal clinical training begins in Year 3 and continues into the final two years through a series of rotating hospital and clinic attachments (clerkships) in the main medical and surgical disciplines.

On successful completion of the 5th year, students sit a final qualifying examination with written and clinical components.

Internship

All graduates are required to complete a twelve-month pre-registration (internship) period working in specified supervised posts before they are allowed to undertake independent practice or commence further specialist training.
